The Summer of Trying New Things

En route to Chicago, I saw the shop from American Pickers
As I went through this summer, I began to call it “The Summer of Trying New Things” because I tried so many things this summer that I had never done before.  The first thing I did, which you can obviously tell, was chop all my hair off.  On a sort of whim, I decided to try it very short for summer.  Secondly, I joined a swim team.  I have never been much of a swimmer, and to this day I’m not sure how I got talked into it, but it ended up being relatively fun and incredibly good exercise.  I suppose the swimming could be what lead into my next endeavor, which was my first triathlon ever.  It was incredibly difficult, but I did end up getting first in my age group (we won’t talk about the fact that there were only three people in it).  The final addition to my summer of new things was new adventure.  I went on a road trip and was able to visit to Chicago for the first time, where I also participated in my first color run.  It was a really fun time getting to see the city, eat some wonderful food, and get splattered like crazy with color.  I suppose my summer just goes to show how much of adventure even the simplest things can be if you are trying new things and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

  1. It sounded like you had a great summer. I've always wanted to visit the windy city for a long time but we can't really afford it that much. Oh well. You know it's great trying out new things because if you don't try different things it could lead to boring things and you don't want that.

  2. I don't think I would ever be able to be on a swim team because I don't think I could handle all of that. That is good you got first. I don't think I could actually even place. I think that it would be fun having a summer of just trying new things.

    1. Well, you could definitely place if there were only three people in your age group!

    1. Chicago was pretty in that "old city" kind of way. I don't think you could call it clean, but I wasn't grossed out by anything. I was surprised at how clean the trains were when I rode on them, but my friend told me that some can get pretty bad.

  4. I've literally always wanted to do a color run!! Not that I am much of a runner... I just think that it would be fun to get splattered with paint. I also did not know that you are on the swim team. That was a surprise but I hope that you enjoyed it!!

  5. Your summer sounded very intriguing. My dad one a 5k. He got first place, but he was also the only one in his age group. I visited New York. It is exactly how everyone describes it to. We didn't get to see much because we were on a time schedule.

  6. Your summer sounded really fun! I have cut my hair short before and it definitely doesn't work for me. I would think it would be fun to be on a swim team! My summer was really fun and all but I think the most fun thing I did was go to Halsey for a bow hunting trip!

  7. I wish my summer was as eventful as yours. I mean I did a lot of things I guess, but not as exciting. I think the one thing that I had the most fun at was the Halsey Bow Hunt thing. It was really fun and I met a lot of new people! My family is going back every year now.

  8. It sounds like you had a pretty good summer. I didn't really do much besides go to Omaha with my family and go to Grand Island with my grandma to go shopping. I wish I could've gone to more places and do more things but I'm only 15 so I can't even drive. Oh well. Ya know how it is. Have a good day.

  9. Most people have the money to have a good summer but I had to get a job so that I can get welding supplies.

  10. I Love the American pickers show, especially the one episode where they find an old Indian Scout. I know I am nerding out but I DON'T CARE! I really do want to do the color run as well.

  11. Sounds like you had a blast! The American Pickers are awesome. My summer was kinda boring though. I worked and tried to save my money but ended up just blowing it in the end.

  12. Sounds like you had a lot of fun! I have been to a couple color runs in Omaha and I went to one in Sioux City this summer. I have a ton of fun at those. I am also so jealous that you got to see the American Pickers store! Their must be so mush cool antique stuff in there!

  13. one of my friend went on a color run and he said it was fun. after he got done running he jumped in the hot tub and it changed the color. the he jot kicked out.

  14. Wow! It seems like you had a really fun summer! It was almost the opposite of my summer. Mine mostly consisted of sleep and football and thats about it. I also think it would be fun to do a a color run.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Well for one at least you still got first in the race. This summer I was to busy to do anything. Baseball was my whole summer and there was barely a break. I still had fun for the summer because I like baseball and the road trips were fun.

  16. lucky i want to see the American Pickers in real life. I have never heard of a color run.

  17. Your summer sounds fun. I like the idea of trying new things. I also ran a 5k this summer but it was a glow run. This summer I was busy with sports but on my free time I was with friends and family and I was at the lake. I also went to a couple concerts which was fun.

  18. Your summer sounds like it was really fun! The whole "Trying new things" just isn't my cup of tea and I very much enjoy doing the things I know I can do. Like sleep, and eat. Anyways! You had a jam packed summer and that's awesome. I'm proud of you.

  19. Your summer was definitely a lot more eventful than mine. All I did was go on vacation, while you did many new things that I probably would never want to try. Anyways, the color run sounds really fun and my class might end up doing a color 5K for our junior class prom fundraiser so that we have enough money to make it look fabulous.

  20. I am really jealous that you participated in a color run. It would be so cool to get so much paint over yourself. I do not think I would ever want to do a triathlon because I have zero endurance. I think it would be fun to join a swim team. You summer sounded pretty cool.

  21. Wow! Your summer sounds awesome! (: My summer was pretty neat. Also about the triathlon I do cross country so it's like one third of a triathlon every day after school then I get to go home and do homework... #Thestruggleisreal

  22. Your summer sounds like it was really exciting! My step sister lives in Chicago, so hopefully I will get to go visit her eventually. I've always wanted to go to Chicago, and going on a road trip would be fun. Especially if my friends were with me. I like to swim, but I don't think I would be good at competitive swimming. I might give it a shot when I get older though.

    ReplyDelete
  23. My summer was just like every other summer. I actually like your new hair cut. I have always wanted to do a color run but we might do one for one of our prom fundraisers. I feel like that would be just a big mess. I wouldn't have gone to Chicago though because I am terrified of big towns and being kidnapped but I'm glad you enjoyed it.

  24. I saw you during your summer of trying new things! I saw you at the Golden spike run! I didn't think that race was very hard, even though I was terribly out of shape. Did you do a lot of active races this year, because I saw you at the spike, and our cross country run and then you did the triathlon to! Well, good job Mrs. Weiss, that's very impressive.

  25. I think the triathlon sounds sounds like a fun time! The running is what would kill me though not necessarily the swimming or the biking. I think that going to Chicago would have been fun! This summer I also stayed pretty busy with football and work. I didn't really try anything new.

  26. I have never really been a swimmer either. I have never had much interest in it but it would be good if you got more interest in it like you said. I wish I could rode trip even though this weekend I am going to Minnesota.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think that it is that you joined a swimming team. Swimming is really fun and it is fun to watch also. Swimmers usually had huge upper bodies and look jacked.

    ReplyDelete
  28. This sounds like you must have had a great summer. I am kinda jealous. I think it is great that you did a triathlon. That would be a very difficult task. I could never do that. Its also cool that you you saw the american pickers van!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I have always wanted to do a color run but unfortunately there isn't really that many color runs around here. But it is for sure one of the things on my bucket list. Also I would love to go on a road trip to wherever. That would be so fun.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Sounds like you had a very interesting summer. Someday I would also like to run a triathalon sometime soon.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well it sounds like you had a very fun and eventful summer. I have been in two triathlons in my life. They were not that fun. It was a huge workout. I do not think that I will be doing another one anytime soon.

  32. i well try new things next summer because it is to late to try things now. Because of school. This summer was great and now school is going to be more great now u are my teacher.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hey, I was on that swim team that you mentioned! What exactly do you mean by "Relatively fun"? Congrats about your triathlon. I have participated in a triathlon, and I felt that it was a great...uh...experience? Well done.

    1. I suppose relatively fun means that compared to what I was thinking it could be, it turned out to be a pretty good time. Once I improved my skills enough that making it across the pool didn't feel like it was going to kill me, I started to have a good time!

  34. That's good that you had a good summer. I bet swimming was fun to do.

    ReplyDelete
  35. That sounds like fun I am not much of a swimmer either, but trying new things is good.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Wow..your summer was sounds very eventful. The amount of exercise you did this summer is impressing. Good for you. I really want to do a color run but there isn't many opportunities around Sutherland. You're very gutsy and risky to chop off all your hair because I couldn't do it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I thinks it's super cool that you were in a triathlon. I also really love your hair. I've told you this before in person but still. I thinks its really cool you saw the American Pickers shop. I love that show. Joining a swim team was pretty cool as well. I love to swim and it really is good exercise.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I bet joining a swim team was fun. But I don't think I could do it. But sounds like you had a adventurous summer. I bet it was really cool to see the American Picker's van. Sounds like you had a bunch of fun in Chicago.

  39. I like trying new things. Last year I tried out the mile in track. It was difficult. It was a fun experience. I was exausted after all the races.

    ReplyDelete
  40. i think that your summer would be so fun, i never had that fun on any of my summer

    ReplyDelete
  41. I tried something new this year as well. I pushed my self out of my comfort zone for my religion and now I want to be baptized. I am now a 100% in it. Any way I think its a wonderful thing that you tried new things, and hope you had fun at it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It really sounds like you had a fun summer, an interesting one at that! I have been wanting to go into a triathlon, but never put much thought into it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Your summer seems really fun! I kind've went out of my comfort zone this summer too. I got to go up to Canada and go see the Niagara Falls which was really pretty. I even got to stay in downtown Ontario and walk down the main street which was really cool. Im glad you had a good summer!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wow, sounds pretty busy. I do like your hair and it's amazing you'd try so many new things this summer. I mostly hung out with Jocie who is pretty lazy. Next year I'll most likely be in California all summer.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Well I wish I would've had as much fun this summer as you did. I had a stress filled summer. Anyways I think that what you did was crazy, and that is awesome, you got to do a triathlon and swim team cutting your hair. You even went on a rode trip I think that is awesome. You are really cool.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Lucky you got to see the American Pickers. I have always wanted to see them. I also would love to go to a big city. Good job running in the color run. I love running!

  47. Your summer sounded very exciting and fun. It seems like you rarely got bored. I wish I could've gone to Chicago with you. I love going to the airport with the cool underground lights (if that's the correct airport I'm talking about). It's been so long since I went on a fun trip. This summer all I did was stayed at home, and earned money mowing my lawn and babysitting for my neighbor. I did go to Kansas, but it was only for two days, and it wasn't a full two days. I had to go down to Kansas one day, and then come back to Sutherland the next. Then I had to go back down to Kansas the next day after I got home. To clear thing up, I had to go to my grandpa's funeral. So my summer wasn't as exciting as yours, but that's okay I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Sounds like you had a great summer! Really jealous about the American pickers experience. I had a really busy summer between babysitting and helping on the farm. I would love to be on a swim team. Maybe next summer??

  49. I really admire you for having the courage of getting that new haircut. It is a bold statement. I also did some things I have never done before this summer. Doing a color run sounds like fun and I want to do one.

  50. Good blog. I am glad you had a lot of adventures. I wanted to participate in the color run but my dad probably would have not let me. But funny thing is we past through Chicago this summer. It is a big and wonderful city. Well have a good day. Bye!

  52. Your new hair cut is super fantastic. It reminds me of Miley Cyrus and she is my wife.(i currently have two lives). Im not much of a runner but i have much respect to the long d runners because i could never do that. In track I'm a jumper i do all field events(field event specialist).

  53. I am glad that you got to try new things! I would love to try new things here sometime soon! I like to try things out of my comfort zone but I don't get out of it very often! I hope that next summer I will be in shape enough to be able to do the 5Ks that you, Mrs. Hawks, and my mom do! I can't wait to be able to do a color run as well!

    ReplyDelete
  54. It sounds like you had a fantastic summer! I would die in a triathlon but good for you on getting first (even though there were only three people.) I think that if I ever run a triathlon I would be the one running the golf cart, boat, and motorcycle just to finish. Anyways congrats on your win and I'm glad you had a wonderful summer.

  55. Sounds like you had a very fun summer. I want to go to Chicago when I get older, it seems a little a very cool place to visit. Doing a color run sounds like so much fun, I have never done one before but it is on my bucket list so hopefully I with eventually end up running in one.

  56. Sounds like your summer was really fun and full of trying new things. My summer was pretty boring until the end when I got to go to Cheyenne. I think a color run would be cool and really fun! By the way like your picture next to the American Pickers van!!

  57. Over the summer I tried lots of new things too. I went to a sports camp and for XC we had to do cross training with the swimmers. I never knew people could swim so far so fast. We had a relay and obviously all of the runners were the slowest there. Luckily I was teamed with some really good swimmers and we ended up winning.

  58. I did a lot of new things this summer too. I went on my first roller coaster at Dollywood in Pidgenforge, Tennessee. I went to Indianapolis to spend 3 1/2 weeks with my uncles and it was fun. I learned what an outlet mall was. We went to Tennessee for a few days but it was cold and rainy there. I dyed my hair a new color. I got my license. I can't swim so a swim team wouldn't even be an option for me but it sounds like fun!

  59. im glad that you had a good summer you where on the swimming team that awsome i beat i can beat you..... chicogo that would be a awsome place to go for the summer what kind of food did you eat.

  60. I am glad you had a good summer. I wish I had as good as a summer. I hope maybe you could get really good at swimming. Maybe you can get as good as Micheal Philips. People should look up to him.

  61. I also participated in the swim team this summer along with running in a few 5ks. I would like to attempt a triathlon sometime in my life. I can run because I already do XC, then I have been on a few swim teams and I also go on bike rides quite often so I might be able to do one! I am glad you had a great summer and hope you have an awesome school year!

  62. Your summer was way better then mine! Honestly all I did this summer was sit on top of the v-rake for my dad. It is really cool that you tried a bunch of new things. I wish I had had the time to do new stuff like you did! My aunt does a lot of triathlons and running in shape stuff like that and I have always admired her for that.

  63. Sounds like you had a really good summer. I'm really jealous that you were participated in a color run. I have also wanted to do color run before!

  66. It sounds like you did a lot of new things summer. I did a lot of cool stuff this summer. I went to Oregon for a week. When i was in the plane on ht way to Portland i saw 3 volcanoes. I that was a first for me!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Sounds like you had a very fun summer. I didn't do much except for a couple trips to Omaha/Lincoln. I didn't really hang with friends this summer. I like your new haircut but I especially like it when it was super long. Ok see ya later.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Im really happy for you, that you were brave enough to try new things. That is really hard sometimes! I think that being on a swim team would be really fun, but I could not really do that well, I dont think. Your new haircut is really different! Im too scared to cut my hair, and im trying to grow it out, so cutting it would be pointless.

    ReplyDelete
  69. That sounds like a lot of fun! I wish I would've had time to try so many new things, I was busy with other stuff all summer, and other than that I sat on the couch and watched Netflix soo

  70. It sounds like you had a very active and exciting summer! I wish I would've done more with mine. I would love to participate in a color run, they sound like a lot of fun!

  71. Hi again! Apparently, my second comment didn't post, so this is my new one....
Your summer seemed to really be full of fun, new things. I have never seen American Pickers, but judging from that picture of the van, it is about old artifacts. But then again, I have no idea. Thanks for the welcome again!

  72. It sounds like you had a very fun summer and it was enjoyable. I have always wanted to do a color run before. I think it would be very fun to do.

  75. Dang that sounds like you did a ton of fun things. The part i would like the most is going to the american pickers. me this year i tried a new baseball team. i think i fit in pretty well. they all seemed to like me. I cant wait tell next year so i can try even more new things

    ReplyDelete
  76. I hate trying new things, well depends on the new thing though. Like food if it looks gross, then I wont eat it. If its trying to go to a different country or something, I would try, but only if I have someone I really trust with me. I am picky I guess you could say.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Sounds like you had a fantastic summer. I love swimming but never had the time to join a swim team. But my summer was also very busy, so I probably wouldn't of been able to anyway. I love the American Pickers show so that would be really cool to see the van!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Your summer sounds way more fun then my summer. I only did one thing this summer. My family and I went on a 3 day vacation to take our minds from having to give up our foster child to her mother. We went to several places but my favorite was the Hastings water park and the I-max movie in 3D. We had to leave early the last day though because I didn't feel well. I had appendicitis. :(

  79. Summer is the best time for trying new things! Sad to say, I didn't have enough free time to do anything spontaneous, which are the best kinds of summers. Optimistic people enjoy life way more instead of just sitting at home doing absolutely nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  80. That's ggood you had a great summer. How was the swimming was it hard? Marothon was it long? Why did you run it. It seem like a long run.
